Histamine intolerance can be difficult to detect because it does not look the same in everyone. Symptoms can appear in different combinations in different people.

Symptoms occur when there is more histamine in the body than can be broken down, for example due to diet or great physical exertion.
Histamine from food is normally broken down in the small intestine by the body's own enzyme DAO (diamine oxidase). In people with histamine intolerance, there is not enough DAO to cope with this. In 1% of the population, this is even genetically determined.

The symptoms are often confused with allergies and treated as such. After all, who would associate a runny nose with a problem in the small intestine?
Once you know what's going on, there are a number of things you can do. From a low-histamine diet, to working with specialists or nutritionists who can help with non-genetic causes, to taking nutritional supplements that supplement the body's own DAO before every histamine-rich meal to enable the natural breakdown of histamine.
